Sanctions (OFAC, North Korea and Iran)

OFAC prohibits most imports of Iranian-origin goods and most imports of goods from North Korea. Other OFAC programs are separate.

Data as of October 2, 2026

This page is factual and informational only. It is not legal advice.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control, part of the Treasury Department, administers economic sanctions. This page covers two programs: Iran and North Korea. It does not describe Russia-related sanctions, even if a catalog note uses the word OFAC for a Russian vehicle. A match on the word OFAC is not a finding that the Iran or North Korea rules apply to that car. [3] [4]

31 CFR § 560.201 prohibits the importation into the United States of goods or services of Iranian origin, or owned or controlled by the Government of Iran, except as otherwise authorized by that part. The section carves out information and informational materials as defined in 50 U.S.C. § 1702(b)(3). The section says the prohibition applies notwithstanding a contract or a license granted before 7 May 1995. [1]

31 CFR § 510.205 prohibits the importation into the United States, directly or indirectly, of any goods, services, or technology from North Korea. The section says the prohibition applies except to the extent provided by regulations, orders, directives, or licenses issued under that part. [2] [4]

Both sections refer to authorizations and licenses that OFAC may issue. This page does not describe how to request a license, and it does not describe a structure that would avoid the prohibition. OFAC's program pages are the place to read the current rules. [3] [4] [1] [2]
