EREV vs PHEV

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says a plug-in hybrid has a battery, an electric motor, a gasoline tank, and an internal combustion engine. It says some plug-in hybrids run on electricity until the battery is nearly empty, and the engine then provides power. It says other plug-in hybrids blend gasoline and electricity while the battery still has charge. [2]

fueleconomy.gov splits plug-in hybrids into two layouts. In a series plug-in, often called an extended-range electric vehicle, only the electric motor turns the wheels. The gasoline engine generates electricity. In a parallel plug-in, both the engine and the motor connect to the wheels. EREV is a layout name on those pages. It is not a separate label class in the EPA text cited here. The EPA page calls the vehicle a plug-in hybrid either way. A catalog match on EREV, PHEV, or extended range means the public text uses those words. [2] [1]
